The Cancer Institute (WIA), also referred to as Adyar Cancer Institute, was designated as the Regional Cancer Centre in 1974. Recognized as a “Centre of Excellence” by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the same year, the hospital has achieved numerous milestones.Notably, in 1956, it became the first institution in South East Asia to install a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. Additionally, in 1970, the Cancer Institute (WIA) pioneered the establishment of the first medical oncology unit in the country. In 1976, the hospital introduced India’s first linear accelerator, and in 2009, it became the first facility in the country to offer Rapid Arc Therapy.Furthermore, the Cancer Institute (WIA) houses the first medical school in India that grants degrees in various sub-specialties of oncology, as recognized by the Medical Council of India.
